Class Title Urban and Regional Planning in Developing Countries
Description This course is designed to emphasize the theories that underlie planning interventions in countries that are newly industrialized or industrializing. Countries such as India, Jamaica, Malaysia, Guatemala, China, Thailand, Tanzania, Hong Kong, Venezuela, and Egypt, varying in size and historical antecedent, will be used for drawing illustrative case studies. The demographic, technological, and ideological changes that have resulted in unprecedented population growth and migration during the development decades will be reviewed. Responses to migration, housing scarcity, need for physical and social infrastructure, for jobs, and amenities will be studied.
