Course List

Term Winter 2012
Class ARCH 506
Class Title Responsive Surfaces
Description This project-based course explores the augmentation of architecture and the city through tangible and embedded interfaces. Using the popular Arduino technology, which makes the scripting of physical input and output signals accessible to non-coders, this course provides an opportunity to build functioning sensate objects. Initial emphasis is on response to physical presence. Final projects may process accumulated data. Material and technology costs are no higher than an ordinary studio or projects course. No particular training is prerequisite, but good physical common sense is a plus. There will also be some survey of recent works by practicing artists. This course is intended for graduate architecture students (who do not have the chance to take the related fall course Smart Surfaces), but is open to participants from other units of the university.
