Class ARCH 507
Class Title Sustainable Material Practices
Description This course focuses on the field implementation of investigative construction practices related to the sustainable use of construction materials. Because pre-electrification technologies most often employed environmentally sustainable materials and methods, the objective of the seminar is to revisit 19th century building technologies through contemporary architectural practices. By
researching regionally manufactured materials student will investigate and develop new construction methods apt to fit into current and future industrial manufacturing streams. Students will first be introduced to building assembly systems related to current and historic construction practices. They will become familiar with the specific material manufacturing processes of a number of regional industries and will analyze a series innovative architectural case-studies that relate to their research. Finally students will develop a project that synthesizes their research into a specific material application.
