Materials are familiar territory for architecture. The physical production of architecture can only be executed with and through materials. However, architectural materiality – the theoretical underpinnings of materials and their effects – is a discursive concept that has seen multiple manifestations throughout architecture's history. We will revisit these past attitudes and ultimately seek to update them by constructing a contemporary working theory of architectural materiality. We will look to extra-disciplinary sources, such as fashion and contemporary art, in an attempt to align our production with broader cultural projects. The main goal for student development will be twofold. First, students will develop a familiarity with fablab equipment and a general technical expertise with regards to computation and material assembly. Second, students will develop the ability to connect design ideas and ambition to the production of material artifacts and to situate that work in a larger disciplinary and cultural context. |
