Taubman College Newell Receives 2017 Urban Edge Award
Assistant professor and principal of Alibi Studio, Catie Newell, receives a 2017 Urban Edge Award, a biennial prize organized by University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee that recognizes excellence in urban design and the ability of individuals to create major, positive change within the public realm. This award honors internationally recognized design professionals who bring fresh, innovative, and effective thinking to the field of urban design. As a recipient of the award, Newell was one of six design professionals invited to give a public lecture, conduct a design workshop, and then participate in a final symposium on April 15, 2017 with keynote speaker Walter Hood.
Newell’s lecture called “This Time,” took place on January 27, 2017. Then on January 28 – 30, 2017, she was paired with one of the other six awardees, Olalekan Jeyifous of Vigilism, to address the issue of urban vacancy.
The theme of the 2017 Urban Edge Award is “FROM WASTE TO WONDER: Working with What Remains.” The goal of the 3 Design Workshops (2 designers per workshop topic) is to create a variety of design projects that address selected urban sites, situations and social inequities that are specific to Milwaukee, but similar to scenarios in post-industrial cities throughout America. Collaborators will use the power of design to re-imagine a Milwaukee where cultural, social, economic and environmental issues are foregrounded and fortified.
