Doctoral Studies / Combined Degrees and Certificates

Because architecture is an interdisciplinary field that relates to many other professions and disciplines, Doctoral Studies offers its Ph.D. or M.Sc. students opportunities to enroll in combined degrees and certificate programs. These allow them to pursue in greater depth their individual specializations and interests. Dual degree programs enable students to earn two degrees in considerably less time than if each degree were earned separately.

A formal Rackham dual degree program offered within Doctoral Studies is:

Students may also initiate other dual degrees, with the approval of Doctoral Studies, allowing them to combine a second field of study with the M.Sc. in Architecture. Student-initiated dual degrees have included:

  • Architecture (M.Sc.) and Urban and Regional Planning
  • Architecture (M.Sc.) and Architecture (M.Arch.)
  • Architecture (M.Sc.) and Social Work
  • Architecture (M.Sc.) and Urban Design
  • Architecture (M.Sc.) and Landscape Architecture

Students may enroll in a certificate program offered by a large number of units on campus. The certificates that have most interested students in Doctoral Studies in Architecture are:

Other certificate programs of potential interest to students in Doctoral Studies in Architecture include:

Students apply for admission to each program. After admission, the student meets the requirements of both degrees, or the degree and the certificate. The student may double-count one-sixth of the sum of the credits required for each of degree/certificate. A student may apply for a student-initiated dual degree or a certificate at any time during the course of study.

If the two units in a combined degree program charge different tuition fees, the student may be liable for the higher tuition in a semester when he/she registers for any credits in the unit with the high tuition.
