High School Programs / ArcStart
ArcStart is a three-week residential program that offers high school students the opportunity to explore the world around them by providing an introduction to designing space and buildings within it. Participants will not only experience the rewarding intensity of an interactive college architecture studio, but will also partake in skill-building workshops that reinforce analytical and conceptual problem solving skills.
Participants witness how a design education prepares students to engage the world around them within the context of a world renowned, cutting edge design institution. Students engage in thought provoking discussions that push the boundaries of their definition of architectural design. The curriculum, which provides courses in drawing, model making, and three-dimensional technologies, shows that common problems can be solved with design solutions.
Living on the University of Michigan's North Campus, students will experience the collegiate lifestyle and have opportunities to strengthen their academic skills, develop a peer support network, and familiarize themselves with the campus and its resources. Students will benefit greatly from presentations conducted by the Office of Financial Aid and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions on how to prepare for college.
At the end of the three-week session, students ultimately realize that architecture at Michigan encompasses more than residential and commercial buildings; it is an interdisciplinary profession that gives individuals the skills needed to interact with associates in business, law, government, medicine, engineering, and the social and natural sciences.
Program Dates: July 14, 2014 – August 4, 2014
