Urban Development Now

Urban Development Now

The Urban Development Now symposium will kick off Friday evening at Taubman College with the 6:00pm lecture by Timur Galen of Goldman Sachs in conversation with Dean Monica Ponce de Leon.

SYMPOSIUM PRECIS

The University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning explores contemporary urbanism through its academic degree programs and strategic initiatives focused on urbanism and the humanities, and urbanism and capital.

Urban Development Now is an annual symposium jointly sponsored by Taubman College and the Ross School of Business, focused on urbanism and capital. The aftermath of the global financial crisis, rampant urbanization, and growing urban inequality demand innovative design and financial solutions that join the agency of inventive architects and urban designers with the ingenuity of urban real estate developers and tacticians of the capital markets. Urban real estate developers operate at the nexus of this expert knowledge and are responsible for the thoughtful deployment of that knowledge and their own intellect towards making cities great.

In this inaugural symposium, participants will focus on two axes of urban development – 1) catalyzing urban development through private and public investments in mixed-use developments, and 2) developing housing and fractional ownership structures that allow for diverse urban inhabitants. Contemporary questions related to urban infrastructure investment, affordability, and access to different types of capital will be explored as both pragmatic and conceptual issues. How can cities remain great if artists and families are continually pushed to their peripheries? How can cities remain affordable with escalations in housing costs that far exceed wage growth? What role should the public markets, governments, municipalities, corporations and philanthropists play in the future of cities?
