Introduction to Machine Knitting
This workshop will focus on introducing the fundamentals of knitted textiles and techniques for machine knitting. Students will work hands-on to generate their own textiles using manually-driven knitting machines while learning the syntax for documenting machine movements and stitch structure to generate a knitted textile.
The language for defining a knit structure and the functionality of the manual machines is akin to the design interface and automated operation of the CNC knitting machine in the FabLab. This workshop will then serve as the foundation for the follow-up workshop, Advanced Machine Knitting and Design, in March which will focus on the use of the CNC knitting machine.
This workshop will be led by Asstant Professor Sean Ahlquist and Textile Designer Liz Bartlett. Please note, only attendees of the Introduction to Machine Knitting workshop can take part in the workshop on CNC knitting. Contact Sean Ahlquist with questions or to register.
