LunchUP: Kirk Westphal (MUP 2006), "Advocating for Planning in Public Forums"
Who gets to decide if good planning becomes reality? Of course. professional planners know the best practices when it comes to using infrastructure wisely, enabling transportation choices, and protecting the environment. And the community's vision is presumably captured in the Master Plan. But whether or not these are implemented "on the ground" often comes down to the opinion of local elected officials and feedback from affected neighbors. In this session, MUP grad-turned-Ann Arbor City Council member Kirk Westphal will shed some light on why a major new development proposed for the corner of Broadway and Maiden Lane is so controversial—and how residents like us can affect the outcome. You might even be inspired to speak at the public hearing for the final vote November 9th!
Lunch is provided. Please bring a drink.
These sessions are a response to requests from faculty and students to learn more about what’s going on in the field in an informal environment. We hope this can inspire emergent thoughts and connections that will inform our scholarship.
