El Hadi Jazairy is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Michigan, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. He is a licensed architect and a founding partner of DESIGN EARTH, a research-based practice engaged in the relationships between design and geography. His research addresses the agency of design in re-qualifying the urban question at a territorial scale. At the intersection of mapping, technology and politics, he investigates in particular spaces of exception –such as camps, campuses, free zones, and city-states – as significant forms of contemporary urbanization. El Hadi holds a Doctorate of Design from Harvard, a Master of Architecture from Cornell, and a Bachelor of Architecture from La Cambre in Brussels. Prior to his appointment at Michigan University, El Hadi was a Lecturer in Architecture at MIT and a Postdoctoral Fellow in Urban Planning and Design at Harvard. He is a founding editor of the journal New Geographies, which focuses on contemporary issues of large-scale environments and editor-in-chief of NG4: Scales of the Earth. His professional practice has received the Europan 6 award and the Regle d’Or de l’Urbanisme. His recent writings have been published in the Journal of Cultural Geography, MONU and the Journal of Architectural Education.
