Michigan Research Studio

Michigan Research Studio is a creative laboratory for innovative K-12 educational initiatives and experimental architectural production. The space is supported in part by philanthropic donations from The Kresge Foundation and Taubman College alumni.

Located in the heart of midtown Detroit, the Studio space hosts and supports the Michigan Architecture Prep college preparatory program, Michigan-Mellon Design Fellows, lectures, films, and special events. The space is an extension of University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, a vibrant constellation of faculty, students and researchers working to address global issues confronting cities, diverse populations and constituencies. As a hub of the college’s Detroit-based initiatives, the space provides a platform for activities that directly support the growth and development of Detroit and its citizens.

Michigan Architecture Prep is an innovative academic enrichment program that assists in the intellectual development of Detroit-based high school students motivated to learn architecture. The program is comprised of a college-level project-based course on architecture and focused workshops on college preparation and career exposure. Students utilize mathematics, visual arts, and critical thinking through the prism of architecture. The learning environment for the program includes the Michigan Research Studio, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, the city of Detroit, and the professional workspaces of architects and designers. Students develop a visual portfolio of work, learn to communicate through writing and speaking, and gain knowledge about pathways from high school to postsecondary education and careers in architecture and design.
