‘Peep Peep’ by Abrons on display at Akademie Schloss Solitude

Ellie Abrons, Assistant Professor of Architecture, will showcase a recent project titled, “Peep Peep” as part of the “Architecture &…” exhibition opening Thursday, November 21 at Akademie Schloss Solitude.

“Peep Peep” presents three multivalent constructions that are simultaneously figural objects, spatial containers, and perceptual conundrums, transforming the architectural model from a scaled representation to an experiential proposition. As perceptual devices, the pieces operate on multiple registers: they are full-scale objects in their own right with specific formal and material dispositions; they are illusions, as their vast interiors belie their bound exterior forms; and they are scaled landscapes that suggest larger, extrapolated environments.

“Peep Peep” pairs architecture with the masterful techniques of historical machines of illusion such as catoptric theatres, dioramas, and the polyrama pantoptique. Using tricks of reflection, projection, and geometry these various forms of entertainment media have delighted and amazed viewers for hundreds of years and have servedas a brilliant means of transporting participants to another world. “Peep Peep” achieves a similar transportation as it presents an immersive and optically tactile experience of three fantastical environments.
