McEwen receives award from The Knight Foundation

Mitch McEwen, Assistant Professor of Architecture, was the recipient of a $10,000 award from the Knight Foundation for her project, “House Opera”. McEwen Studio teamed with HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN? to produce the entry to the Knights Art Challenge, under the prompt, “What’s your best idea for the arts in Detroit?”

House Opera answers the question by proposing to redesign a vacant house into an opera, artist residency studio and a performance space. The proposal was one of 58 intriguing concepts meant to reinvigorate the arts in the city, with awards totalling $2.48 million.
