Tran selected to speak at TEDxUofM

Valerie Tran (M.P.H./M.U.P.’15) is one of nine speakers selected for this year’s six annual TEDxUofM conference taking place on Friday, March 20th from 9:00am to 4:30pm at the Power Center for the Performing Arts.

This year’s conference titled, “Constructive Interference,” refers to the point where two ideas collide and become something larger, promoting transmission of thought and amplification of action. Tran’s presentation will share ways individuals can make a difference by harnessing our resources and skills to act tactically in the face of big problems. Tran will also talk about the health impacts of climate change by drawing on examples of her research in the intersection of public health and urban planning. She will show there are creative ways to address the health impacts of climate change if we’re open to thinking beyond our prescribed roles.

In addition to being a student, Tran also serves as Co-Director of Nurses for Cool and Healthy Homes and is a 2014 Dow Sustainability Fellow. Her work explores issues of health equity and environmental justice, and she believes that urban planning offers practical strategies for addressing the health impacts of climate change.
