Ahlquist Published in International Journal for Architectural Computing

Assistant Professor of Architecture Sean Ahlquist was recently published in the International Journal for Architectural Computing (IJAC). Ahlquist’s article, focused on material computation and advanced textile structures, is titled “Sensory material architectures: Concepts and methodologies for spatial tectonics and tactile responsivity in knitted textile hybrid structures.” Associate Dean for Research Geoffrey Thün served as one of the editors for this IJAC issue which features work on the topic of sentience and systems boundaries in architecture.

The article discusses a series of prototypes, design methodologies, and technologies that articulate a textile’s micro-architecture, at the scale of fibers and stitches, in order to form structural, spatial, and sensory-responsive qualities. This closer look at textile fabrication is designed to address specific challenges for children in negotiating multiple sensory inputs, an underlying factor of autism spectrum disorder.

The International Journal for Architectural Computing is a peer-review journal dedicated to promoting collaborative research and development of computer-aided architectural design.
