Newell Speaks on NYC Architecture Panel

Newell Speaks on NYC Architecture Panel

Assistant Professor of Architecture Catie Newell took part in a panel event held in New York City on May 22, 2016, discussing art and architecture’s role in the visibility and reclaiming of abandoned places. Newell engaged in discussion with artist Ian Strange, notable for his large scale work on houses, and Professor Harris Beider, currently Visiting Professor in SIPA at Columbia University. Social researcher Natalia Radywyl served as moderator.

The panel celebrated the opening of Strange’s exhibition, SUBURBAN, presented by Standard Practice. The panel served as an open discussion about the role art and architecture can play in the wider social implications of dereliction and recovery, and how art, architecture and policy overlap in the work both the professors and architects are doing. Strange and Newell will be collaborating in the fall on a new installation for the Rumsey Street Project in Grand Rapids, curated by SiTE:LAB.
