“Green The Way” MUP Student Project Wins MAP Planning Excellence Award

Green the Way: Moving Forward on an Allen Creek Trail,” will be awarded the 2016 Planning Excellence Award for Outstanding Student Project by the Michigan Association of Planning (MAP/APA Michigan) at its annual conference, Planning Michigan, on October 26, 2016 at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The team of twelve MUP students and two faculty advisors worked with the Allen Creek Greenway Conservancy and the City of Ann Arbor to create a plan that would elaborate on the routing, design, and phasing recommendations for a proposed biking and walking trail in the City of Ann Arbor. The students on the team were: Matt Bourke, Hannah Dean, Matt Ferris-Smith, Ashleigh Johnson, Christopher Johnson, Luke Norman, Tolu Olorode, Tricia Pontau, Arthur Prokosch, Lucas Reigstad, Pam Schaeffer, and Douglas Smith. Associate Professor Larissa Larsen and Lecturer Eric Dueweke were faculty advisors.

A jury of APA Wisconsin Chapter professionals reviewed and selected the project, citing these aspects of the project in their recommendation: “Exceptional quality and great ambition for a student project. Participation, innovation, and synthesis of past plans were all remarkable aspects of the plan. Methodology was easily transferrable to others. The report is well organized, has great graphics, and impressive results. It was obvious to us that these student authors showed perseverance to pull it off to the end.”

This award marks the 4th year in a row, and the 8th time in the last 10 years that a U-M MUP capstone project has been so honored.

The Michigan Association of Planning, the state chapter of the American Planning Association, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting sound community land use planning that benefits the residents of Michigan.
