Wilkins Speaks at The Alternative Art School Fair

Dr. Craig Wilkins, a senior lecturer at Taubman College, was invited to give a keynote lecture at The Alternative Art School Fair which took place on November 19 – 20, 2016 at Pioneer Works in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

The Alternative Art School Fair presents an introduction to alternative art schools from around the U.S. and the world. In his lecture, “The Architecture of Arts Education” keynote speaker Dr. Wilkins considers the role of institutional space–and practices ambivalent to its sanction–in the production of transformative sites, art and artists.

“The impetus to create an alternative art school is rooted not only in a desire to create “better” art, but to create the conditions for greater freedom of expression. Often run as free, artist-run initiatives, the values and visions of alternative art schools vary widely in methodology, mission and governance. But even when they are relatively small in scale they provide vital models of cultural critique and experimentation.”
