MiSo* Open House
May 31, 2009 12:00 PM
Matthei Botanical Gardens
The Michigan Solar House (MiSo*) is an 800-square foot, solar-powered home designed and built by a team of students from Taubman College.
Students and faculty from Taubman College coordinated an interdisciplinary team of over 150 people, including students and faculty from schools across campus (LS&A, School of Art and Design, School of Natural Resources and Environment, Ross School of Business, and College of Engineering), as well as local professionals and community volunteers to build support, raise funds, and market the MiSo* brand.
As a response to the world energy crisis, earlier generations adopted forms of low-energy and low-consumption solar-housing conservation principles. MiSo* is the bridge between previous solar housing, consumerism, and today's conveniences, offering a broad range of size and amenity options to form not just a single building but a palette of choices that can be modified, expanded, and exchanged over time. Embodied in all of the options offered by MiSo* is an approach to design and fabrication that reinterprets the single-family dwelling based on principles of sustainability, surplus energy, innovation, customization, and craftsmanship.
MiSo* is now located at University of Michigan's Matthaei Botanical Gardens.
