Urban Design's Intermediate Studio Film Screening: "Battle of Algiers"
10/27/09
Rm 2222
Art + Architecture Building
As part of Urban Design's Intermediate Studio, on-location urban films are
screened regularly and discussed for their portrayal of buildings, spaces,
and social life in cities.
"Battle of Algiers" (1966; Gillo Pontecorvo, director), is the harrowing
depiction of the Algerian struggle for independence as played out in the
"Casbah" and "European Quarter" of Algiers.
Few films have ever so fully integrated a city with their narratives. Here
the contrasting forms of colonial and indigenous settlements are as
essential to the plot as the protagonists, including Algerian
revolutionaries who play themselves.
