Apply / Graduate Certificate in Real Estate Development
You are eligible to apply to the Graduate Real Estate Certificate Program if you are:
- A current UM graduate student
- Applying to a UM graduate degree program concurrently
- NEW: A graduate of an accredited 4 year college or university.
Rackham Graduate School administers the application process for more than 120 UM departments and programs that offer graduate and graduate/professional degrees. Departments recommend admission to Rackham, which monitors requirements and procedures and certifies the admission recommendation as appropriate.

the completed application package should include the following:
- Real Estate application
- Two letters of recommendation
- Transcripts
- Test scores: GRE, GMAT, or LSAT
- Answers to three essay questions
- No statement of purpose or personal statement is necessary
Application process for current UM students or those applying to a UM graduate program now
Submit the appropriate application form and answer three essay questions. Please request that your home program forward a copy of all transcripts, letters of recommendation, and test scores to Real Estate Certificate Admissions at the address below. No new letters of recommendation are required, unless you wish to submit a new reference (one letter only) from a real estate professional, those in related fields, or another employer.
If you are in a Rackham program:
- Download the Dual Degree application from the link on the right
- Have your home program copy letters of recommendation, transcripts, and test scores
- Submit your essays with the application
If you are in a non-Rackham program (e.g. Business or Law):
- Apply online at the link on the right for “Non-Rackham Applicants”
- Essays can be submitted with your online application or sent directly to Real Estate Certificate Admissions
- Have your home program copy letters of recommendation, transcripts, and test scores and send directly to Real Estate Certificate Admissions
- Request an official transcript for Rackham and send to the address below
UM Rackham program graduates
- UM graduates of a Rackham program should download the application for readmission
- Each letter of recommendation should be accompanied by the Rackham recommendation form
UM graduates of a non-Rackham program and non-UM graduates
UM Graduates of a non-Rackham program or graduates of an institution other than the University of Michigan should apply online through the link on the right for "Non-Rackham Applicants." The Rackham online application will prompt you to enter contact information for your recommenders.
They will receive an email and instructions to submit your recommendation online.
Official transcript(s) should be sent to both Rackham and Real Estate Certificate Admissions
Transcripts
In all cases, there is no need to send UM transcripts since the program can access them directly.
- Please have a copy of other undergraduate or graduate-level transcripts sent directly from your current program
- If you are not in (or applying to) a Rackham program, have official transcripts sent to Rackham directly from the relevant institution
Test scores
- If you are a current UM graduate student or you are applying to a UM graduate program now, please have GRE, LSAT or GMAT scores sent from your home program
- Students who graduated from an undergraduate institution in which instruction was not in English are required to submit TOEFL scores. If your score is not accessible at this point, contact Beverly Walter at 734-763-3075.
If you are not currently at UM and not applying to a graduate degree program at UM, official scores should be sent to the University of Michigan.

Real Estate essay questions
Please respond to the essay questions using no more than four double-spaced pages. You can submit your answers along with an online application or by mailing or emailing as an attachment to realestate@umich.edu. The online application prompts you to submit a statement of purpose. This is not necessary for the Real Estate Certificate.
