ON SITE is a new, experimental course in which we study modern architectural history and design through the exceptional buildings in our midst. Rather than learning from reproduced images, we will travel directly to the local and regional exemplars that allow us to access global architectural ideas. Course lectures will be conducted on site, bringing larger cultural contexts (including history, politics, and precedents) to bear on space experienced immediately. In other words, without classroom walls, students will learn about the built environment from within, from the spaces themselves, as they simultaneously occupy that environment. They will be asked to engage directly and reflect critically on aesthetic, technical, and social factors observed and researched at the University of Michigan campus, in and around Ann Arbor, in Detroit, and on two regional field trips to Columbus, Indiana, and Midland, Michigan.
