|Class Title||SPIRITSPACE Making Place|
A forum for exploring the loci of Spirit and spirit(uality) within architectural place-making. In addition to gaining a more personal understanding of place-making and career ambition as fundamentally 'spiritual' pursuits, this seminar seeks to provide guidance for how individual professional ambition might concurrently contribute to a sustainable planetary good; specifically, "SPIRITSPACE" will seek to serve as a weekly meeting ground for each of us to find our own voice within a global cornucopia of voices . . . a global cornucopia rooted in our own cornucopia of voices here within Taubman and in our collective obligation to define a more inclusive basis for approaching the teaching and practice of architecture;
specifically, the seminar will focus on our collective obligation to define architecture for what it commonly seems to be a uniquely material and spiritual medium giving voice to all manner of human ambition.
Exploring ambition and personal/professional obligations inherent in professional design practices, class sessions are organized around six topical themes: Ecology, Cosmology, Spirituality, Religiosity, Community, and Technology. Pursued within these fluid points of navigation, the seminar encourages each of us to gain a view of ourselves as vanguards and stewards necessarily engaged in directed change.
vanguard [Fr., avant-garde]: One in the forefront; leadership by example.
visionary: One weaving hindsight with foresight and far sight to create path-breaking possibilities.
steward: One who understands that the personal and the planetary are integral - i.e., that infrastructure, bio-structure, geo-structure, et al. are one.
Seminar discussion will be augmented with formal and informal lectures, selected readings, and invited Guests. Within evolving class discussion, individual contributions to the crafting of 'A Design Compass for 21 C Place-making,' will be a major course requirement. Compass, contributions will be highlighted and shared via 30-minute audio/video presentations.
While each seminar session is necessarily interdependent, each is approached as a distinct building block of knowledge aimed at clarifying the rewards to be gained from a public sharing of personal conviction.
