Course Detail

Term Fall 2018
Class URP 610
Class Title The City in Fiction: What Can Literature and Film Teach Planners?"
Description This seminar introduces students to a selection of novels, stories, poems, and films about the urban experience. The chosen works contain rich, empathetic descriptions of urban life that are sometimes missing from our field's traditional focus on the built environment. Set in a range of international cities, at different historical moments, the readings and films will reveal how citizens infuse the places they live with meaning and significance, thus deepening the cultural context in which we might evaluate planning's aims and approaches. The course is structured around weekly themes, such as: migration, infrastructure, crisis, memory, and utopia.
