Rediscovering Retail: Market Opportunities on
Detroit's Eastside During the winter 2002 semester, 18 advanced Urban and Regional Planning Program master's students worked with the Detroit Eastside Community Collaborative to analyze the potential for retail development on the Eastside of Detroit. As the students' analysis shows, Detroiters are underserved in retail and spend half their retail dollars outside the city. Many opportunities exist for redevelopment that increases the availability of retail; the report analyzes the potential of specific sites for big-box development, Main Street-style retail, and commercial strip development.
