November 2019 DEI Spotlight - Laura Brown

November 2019 DEI SPOTLIGHT

Name: Laura Brown

Preferred Pronoun: She/Her/Hers

Affiliation/Title: Staff - Programs Assistant

Degree(s): Bachelor of Arts

Home Country: United States

Language(s) Spoken: English

Gender Identity: Female

Favorite food: All things from the ocean- steamed, fried - any of it.

Favorite book and why: Here If You Need Me by Kate Braestrup is about faith and resilience, and about being called to serve people in simple ways.

Favorite thing to do when not at TC: Sew quilts and play with our dogs with my wife.

DEI Contribution/Highlight: Because I mention my wife to students so frequently, I have had the privilege to be one of the first people students come out to early on in their coming out process and have helped to guide them to campus resources like Spectrum or the Jim Toy Center. Over my last 15 years here, I have seen a marked change in the creation of a safe space within the college and nationally for students to be accepted as they are.

Why is diversity, equity, and inclusion important to you? Diversity makes for better potlucks, both the literal “dish to pass” and the metaphorical gathering of equals. We are more firmly ourselves when we are joyously present for others.
