Why did you choose Taubman College?
Aspiring to be an urban planner with a passion for design, I couldn’t refuse the opportunity to study both urban and regional planning and urban design as a dual degree. My hometown has multiple infrastructural issues, so I felt that comparing developed and developing nations and how each tackle/tackled issues could be a very important tool for me to understand. Another key deciding factor was the profile of professors and visiting and practicing faculty, which opened a wide array of research opportunities.
Describe the work that you do.
At Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl, we specialize in integrating urban hydrology, landscape architecture, environmental engineering, and art, and we are a catalyst for livable spaces that integrate natural systems from city scale to building scale. The firm’s core belief is that people need to be the focus in order for spaces to be truly sustainable and livable. Our biggest accomplishments have been Bhishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, Jurong Lake Garden, and Kampung Admiralty (all in Singapore) and Cloud Burst (in Copenhagen) — these are a few of many projects where the focus has been on water-sensitive urban design (WSUD). I’m currently working on Palawan Beach Singapore, a family entertainment expansion by the Shangri-La group; Eco World in Bangalore, a commercial development; and KHI Masterplan in Indonesia, a proposal for a WSUD system in a new district.
How did Taubman College prepare you for your career?
The syllabus and course offerings give students theoretical knowledge and a taste of the ‘real’ world through the capstone, design studios, and innumerable visiting practitioners. This gives students a well-rounded exposure and skill set needed for their careers.
What is an important lesson that has stayed with you from your time at Taubman College?
Teamwork really makes the dream work. While there is much to learn from the books, there is much to learn from others’ (professors, staff, colleagues, and friends) experiences, so be open to their perspectives. I also learned to be patient and listen to people and process what they’re saying before responding. These are qualities you develop during the program that really help in a work setting.
What did you like best about Taubman College?
The best thing, apart from the curriculum, was the people — staff, faculty, and colleagues. I met and interacted with people from across the globe, creating bonds that last forever.
