Master of Architecture / Engineering (M.Arch./M.Eng.)

Program Overview

The M.Arch./ M.Eng. dual degree is a formally structured dual degree combining architecture and construction engineering and management. The program combines the two-year/60 credit hour or three-year/99 credit hour M.Arch. degree with the one-year/26 credit hour M.Eng. degree, resulting in a two and one half year/73 credit hour program or four-year/118 credit hour program (up to 13 credits may be double counted).

Degree Requirements

The dual M.Arch/M.Eng degree requires the completion of a minimum of 73 credit hours. Specifically, a student must complete:

  1. Four courses (24 credit hours) of architectural design (ARCH 552, ARCH 562, ARCH 662, ARCH 672);
  2. Eight courses (21 credit hours) of specific required architecture courses (ARCH 515: Sustainable Systems, ARCH 516: Architectural Representation, ARCH 527: Integrative Systems I, ARCH 528: Integrative Systems II, ARCH 537: Fabrication, ARCH 572: Architectural Theory and Criticism,  ARCH 583: Professional Practice, and ARCH 660: Thesis Development Seminar)
  3. Three courses (9 credit hours) selection from 500/600 level Architecture Courses
  4. 12 credit hours of Construction Engineering “core” courses (CEE 431, CEE 532, and CEE 536)
  5. 3 credit hours of graduate-level Construction Professional courses
  6. 3 credit hours of a Construction Practice seminar (CEE 530)
  7. 1 credit hour of a CEM seminar and 1 credit hour of CEE seminar or a technical or management area outside the CEE Department
  8. Any additional cognate/elective courses needed to fulfill the 73 credit hours and general requirements of each degree

In addition to the requirements outlined above, students admitted to the M.Eng. program may also be asked to complete one or more of the following civil engineering background courses or their approved equivalents without graduate credit by the end of their first year of study: CEE 312: Structural Engineering; CEE 351: Civil Engineering Materials; CEE 345: Geotechnical Engineering; CEE 431: Construction Contracting. Most students who have an undergraduate degree in Architecture will have taken the equivalent of CEE 312 and CEE 351. In order to minimize scheduling problems, students are strongly encouraged to complete these courses prior to entering the dual degree. Please note that any required pre-requisite courses, as well as other 300 level courses, will not be recognized for graduate credit within the 26 credit hours required for the M.Eng. degree.

A cumulative GPA of “B” must be earned in each unit and no more than 13 credit hours may be double-counted toward the two degrees. Each unit maintains a separate transcript and either degree may be awarded independently, provided the requirements for the single degree have been met.

Admissions Requirements

To be eligible for the dual 2-year M.Arch./M.Eng. dual degree, a student must hold a B.S. degree from Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning or an equivalent degree earned at another institution. Graduate students enrolled in the 3-year option must complete all required 300 and 400 level course work before applying to the dual M.Arch./M.Eng. program. Two complete and separate applications are necessary, one to Taubman College for the Master of Architecture and one to the College of Engineering. An application fee is required for both programs. Each program will make an admission decision independently of the other. Only if both programs approve admission is the applicant considered a dual degree student.
