This course explores urban and environmental planning issues and problems. The course is divided into four sections: (1) How do we study cities and regions? (urban history; types of cities; metropolitan patterns; drivers of growth, expansion, and decline; contemporary challenges) (2) Who shapes the city? (city government; local land use planning; developers and financial markets; nonprofits and community-based organizations; residents), (3) How can we advance urban sustainability? (what is the planner’s role?; urban design; housing; transportation; climate change; energy sources), and (4) How can we advance environmental justice? (Community-Based planning and advocacy; Indigenous planning and Land Back)
Note: Please note that the discussion/activity sections meet at different times and are not interchangeable. You must register and attend your assigned discussion section. Permissions to add the course for students on the waitlist will not be determined until after the first class session. Priority will be given to students who attend the first class session and/or graduating seniors.
