Mark Walch, a Master of Architecture graduate from the University of Michigan, will be visiting Ann Arbor to talk to students about his career path, interdisciplinary teamwork, and the value gained from an architect’s education. He is currently President of Gannon Technologies in Washington DC.

He will share experiences that demonstrate that the breadth and depth of what he learned as an architect has wide applicability in places architects rarely visit.

For many years he worked in an architecture firm in NYC that did pioneering work in broadening the range of services architects could offer to their clients including assisting with the operational planning that leads to space programming.

In the mid-1990s, while working on an automated process for vectorizing architectural and engineering drawings, he invented a way for computers to read handwriting. What started out as a plan to supplement his income as an architect ultimately led to a career change. Today, he runs a technology company that builds tools to quantify all kinds of things ranging from handwritten text to fingerprints to objects in photographic imagery.

He says “I now design software algorithms but the way I do it is rooted in how I programmed and designed buildings. I manage a highly technical team and support customers, but I learned to do this by working with clients, consulting engineers and other consultants as well as contractors. There is a distinctive style for ‘managing like an architect’ which requires the ability to persuade and motivate and inspire rather than to compel.”
