Architecture Doctoral Student Colloquium: Conversation 5, "Research and Praxis"

March 31, 2017 at 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

This session of the colloquium is going to focus on the nature of the relationship between research and activism, with our main speakers Bryce Detroit and Ana María León from Detroit Resists. Questions will include: In what ways do academic research and activism come together? Can research be activist? What is the role of self-reflexivity and criticality in defining activism in research? What are the ethical responsibilities of research and how can they be related to activism? How does the academic constraints boost or limit research’s capacity to be activist? Is there a clear-cut divide between the researcher and the practitioner involved in activism? Speakers: Bryce Detroit and Ana María León

Each year, the Doctoral Program in Architecture at Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning sponsors a series of discussions on a topic of interest in architectural research. This year, the doctoral colloquium, titled “The City Critical,” will explore issues in urban research using Detroit at the case study. In investigating the numerous techniques used to engage with the condition of Detroit, the colloquium will raise questions concerning effective research, design, curation, and activism, while foregrounding interventions in Detroit as effective and globally-applicable models.
