Eric Schuldenfrei and Marisa Yiu

Eric Schuldenfrei and Marisa Yiu founded eskyiu, a design collaborative integrating culture, community, and technology in New York. Their interest lies in examining the ways in which the built environment and constructs of labor shape social relationships by forming connections between civic engagement and sustainable design. Art and technology are utilized to engage the viewer and the larger public. Previous selected projects include: ‘Chinatown WORK 2006’ an interactive public arts installation sponsored by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, The Department of Cultural Affairs, NYC and 3form material solutions; ‘SINO’ a video installation shown at the Brooklyn Museum; ‘Nutritious: an aeroponic façade’ exhibited at the Architectural Association in London funded by 3form and Greenfingers. Recent projects include: ‘Mediated Labour: interactive façade’ for the Hong Kong- Shenzhen Biennale on Architecture and Urbanism and ‘Human Motor: narratives from the assembly line’ exhibited at the 4th International Architectural Biennale Ljubljana. Forthcoming, eskyiu has been selected to represent Hong Kong to exhibit ‘Urban Pastoral: fabricating a vertical landscape’ project for the HK Pavilion 2008 Venice Biennale of Architecture.
Eric Schuldenfrei and Marisa Yiu have both lectured and participated as guest panelists in various academic to artistic forums such as ‘You can’t take it with you’ at the London International Documentary Festival, British Museum, “AsiaGSD ‘Specific Weights of Architecture: Asian Probes’ Conference at Harvard University.

Collectively they have taught at Princeton University, Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, University of Cambridge, The Architectural Association in London, University of Pennsylvania, Parsons School of Design, and various workshops at the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum with the Center for Urban Pedagogy. They are now based in Hong Kong, teaching and researching at the HKU Department of Architecture, while running their design practices. Eric Schuldenfrei holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University and a Masters of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge, where he is currently completing his PhD. Marisa Yiu holds a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University and a Masters of Architecture from the Graduate School of Architecture, Princeton University.
