Exhibition Opening: Presence Past: The U-M Campus as Archive

Lecture and opening April 7. Exhibition on view: April 8 – May 26

How does the past affect the present, as we experience the space around us? This project explores the possible role of Michigan’s architectural past on current experience of the campus. Beginning with the University Centennial of 1917, this exhibition suggests that reflecting on the past might allow us to project forward into an uncertain future as we shape the built environment of the university. Through a series of targeted interventions, we will reactivate Michigan’s past history, to inform its present and future. One component of the dual exhibition will unfold in the College Gallery of the Art and Architecture Building; the other will unfold on a range of sites throughout North and Central Campus. These sites will be selected by graduate students in consultation with architecture faculty and with assistance from members of the office of Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC).

In conjunction with the University’s Bicentennial initiative
