Hazard Mitigation Workshop

October 25, 2021 at 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Hazard Mitigation Workshop

Hazard mitigation planning involves the reduction of impacts from various hazards, though a planning process. The primary hazards under consideration are natural hazards from weather, floods, drought, wildfires, earthquakes, and so on. Additional technological and human-related hazards may also be analyzed and included in the plan, such as infrastructure failures, hazardous materials, pandemics, or terrorism. Mike Sobocinski has been involved in planning for these topics at the state and local level for nearly 22 years, as a civilian member of the Michigan State Police in Lansing. He gained his position with a Master in Urban and Regional Planning degree, but brings a wide array of additional training to bear on this topic, including an Engineering A.Sc. and social science degrees up through a Sociology M.A. In this workshop, Mike will describe the basic processes and essential concepts used in the development of hazard mitigation plans in Michigan.
