Julian Bleecker, Near Future Laboratory: It's Time to Imagine Harder

March 29, 2023 at 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Julian Bleecker coined the term “design fiction” to describe the creation of artifacts from imagined near futures that “express the contexts and outcomes of change.” This evocative approach to designing for social, political, and technological change is captured in his latest publication, The Manual of Design Fiction, written with colleagues from Near Future Laboratory.

Julian’s work reaches into the quote-unquote real world as well through efforts such as OMATA, a uniquely beautiful bicycle computer, and the company that he created to manufacture and sell the devices.

He regularly runs design and innovation workshops with companies such as IKEA, Apple, Google, and Facebook, amongst many others. Throughout his career, Julian has had experiences as a start-up founder, futures strategist, professor at USC’s famed School of Cinematic Arts, mentor, and author.

His unique skill is to look at the world a bit sideways and see opportunities to create products and experiences that are unanticipated, unexpected, and beautiful alternatives to the status quo.
