Keynote Lecture: Paul Karakusevic

September 12, 2019 at 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Keynote Lecture: Paul Karakusevic

In 1997, Paul established his practice followed by Karakusevic Carson Architects with the aim of improving design in public housing and public buildings in London and the UK. The practice has grown to over 75 people and is wholly focused on the Public Sector and currently counts 12 local authorities, the Greater London Authority (GLA), Transport for London (TfL) and the Olympic Legacy as regular client groups for whom we are leading some of the most complex public projects in the UK.

Paul maintains a hands-on role in projects and is closely involved with both the early design stages and then seeing this translate in to the detailed design and management of each scheme. His invaluable contribution is  a rigorous approach to design excellence and an in-depth knowledge of delivering to the highest standards. He drives the practice’s focus on detailing and specification and the philosophy of building with durable construction materials for homes and neighbourhoods that can stand the test of time and deliver best value for the community.

The  projects of Karakusevic Carson Architects have won numerous RIBA, Housing Design, New London Architecture and Civic Trust Awards and the practice has been named ‘Housing Architect of the Year’ several times and shortlisted for ‘Masterplanner of the Year’ in 2015 and 2017.

Paul has taught and lectured extensively but practice and building have been a paramount focus. The knowledge and understanding the practice has developed in public housing is almost unrivalled and recently, Paul has been invited to lecture / talk on the Practice’s work and Public Housing at the RIBA, the American Institute of Architects in New York and Los Angeles, the AIA Austrialia, the Cooper Union, the Architecture Foundation and various high profile universities in the UK, Europe, USA and Australia. In 2017 Paul co-authored a book with Abigail Batchelor for the RIBA titled ‘Social Housing: Definitions and Design Exemplars’.

As a strong believer in raising aspiration in the challenging neighbourhoods we work in, Paul is a Trustee of the Stephen Lawrence Trust, London Festival of Architecture and the Architecture Foundation and lends his support to numerous youth and young peoples’ charities and sports groups.

In addition to judging on various design awards panels, Paul lends his expertise to numerous local and national Design Review Panels and supports the review system as an integrated part of the design process. He has been selected as a ‘Mayor’s Design Advocate’, joining a panel of architecture and design experts who have been selected by the Mayor of London to provide design guidance to City Hall and local councils.

The keynote lecture will kick off a full-day symposium, Re: Housing: Detroit, on Friday, September 13, 2019.
