Radical Contextualism: Cultivating a Design Attitude Valuing Local Context

Presenter: Henco Bekkering, Delft University

Henco Bekkering is emeritus professor of Urban Design from Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands and has spent a sabbatical at Taubman College, UofM. His lecture will give the background for the design approach he names Radical Contextualism. This approach will then be demonstrated with some projects from his practice: the new center for the small Dutch town Alphen aan den Rijn, and the theme park Huis ten Bosch on Nagasaki Bay in Japan.

These sessions are a response to requests from faculty and students to learn more about what’s going on in the field in an informal environment. We hope this can inspire emergent thoughts and connections that will inform our scholarship. If you have research you would like to present, or a provocative article you would like to discuss, please speak with Larissa Larsen, David Weinreich, or Carla Kayanan.
