Neighborhood Responses to Mass Foreclosures

Mortgage foreclosures hit Detroit hard between 2005 and 2014, especially in stronger neighborhoods where more than one-third of structures experienced foreclosure. This discussion focuses on whether community-based efforts could save middle- and working-class neighborhoods from the destruction of mortgage foreclosures. Prior research has shown that collective efficacy can influence neighborhood strength, but the onslaught of foreclosures offered an extreme case to investigate the limits of community-based efforts. Professors Deng, Dewar, and Thomas will discuss the preliminary findings they made with Eric Seymour and welcome your feedback.

These sessions are a response to requests from faculty and students to learn more about what’s going on in the field in an informal environment. We hope this can inspire emergent thoughts and connections that will inform our scholarship. If you have research you would like to present, or a provocative article you would like to discuss, please speak with Larissa Larsen, David Weinreich, or Carla Kayanan.
