Lunch UP: Regional Transit in Fragmented Region: His Vision, and Eminent Challenges

Michael Ford–Executive Director, Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan

Southeast Michigan has a poor track record of good regional public transportation.  Michael Ford is the newly appointed CEO of the Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan (RTA), and the former CEO of the Ann Arbor area transit system, AAATA.  In this new role, he is working to overcome our region’s history, and develop a Bus Rapid Transit service that connects the counties of Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw and the City of Detroit.  Mr. Ford and the RTA are currently working to develop a specific plan for the service.  They are also preparing to fund the service through a 2016 ballot measure, decided across the four counties and the City of Detroit.  Mr. Ford will discuss his vision for the region, and can share his perspective on both the opportunities and challenges of planning a regional transit system in Southeast Michigan.

These sessions are a response to requests from faculty and students to learn more about what’s going on in the field in an informal environment. We hope this can inspire emergent thoughts and connections that will inform our scholarship. If you have research you would like to present, or a provocative article you would like to discuss, please speak with Larissa Larsen, David Weinreich, or Carla Kayanan.
