LunchUP: Sanjeev Vidyarthi, “Understanding India’s New Approach to Spatial Planning and Development:  A Salient Shift?”

Sanjeev Vidyarthi
Associate Professor of Urban Planning and Policy – University of Illinois at Chicago
Senior Fellow – Great Cities Institute

How is India planning its diverse range of settlements, which vary from rapidly growing cities to remote villages? How have broader changes in the country’s polity influenced its approach to the spatial planning and development of urban and rural places? Dr. Sanjeev Vidyarthi will present insights from his new book (co-authored with Dr. Shishir Mathur and Dr. Sandeep Agarwal and published by Oxford University Press) that examines India’s approach to spatial planning and development. Taking the regime change in the early 1990s as a point of departure, this innovative study focuses upon the interrelated but rarely examined together domains of infrastructure finance and development, local planning practice, and on-the-ground empirical outcomes. Instead of investigating the largest cities—such as Kolkata, Mumbai, and Delhi—that dominate the discourse on urban India, this book pays close attention to regional cities, rural settlements, and the nuances of the shift away from the well-documented Nehruvian planning and development model. Dr. Vidyarthi’s talk will illustrate how the tensions between democratic and market-oriented impulses are shaping India’s existing and emergent settlements, drawing out useful insights for scholars of spatial planning both in contemporary India and the global south.

These sessions are a response to requests from faculty and students to learn more about what’s going on in the field in an informal environment. We hope this can inspire emergent thoughts and connections that will inform our scholarship.

Lunch is included, please bring a drink.
