New York Launch: CriticalProductive V2.1 Post-Capitalist City

December 13, 2012 at 7:00 pm

What would a post-capitalist city look like? Work in this issue contextualizes literary, science fiction and visual culture: with work from Morgan Ng on sustainability’s Achilles’ heel, Madhu Dubey on the deep structures of science fiction narrative as it locks in age-old stereotypes of identity, David Bieri on the financialization of real estate, and Sabine Haenni on imaging global urban conditions. Works by Steve Schwenk, Livia Corona, Doug Rickard, and Michael Zelehoski explore post-disaster landscapes and capitalist conditions in New Orleans, Mexico, Google streetview, and the embedded materiality of shipping pallets. Projects by Superflex, Giancarlo Mazzanti, arquitectura 911sc, and Luis Úrculo explore bankrupt banks and flooded McDonald’s, the architectural typologies of social housing and public libraries, and the commodification of architectural icons.

Supported in part by the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning and the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.

Journals will be available for purchase at the launch event.
