Panel Discussion: Workforce and Economic Development in Detroit

November 16, 2015 at 6:30 pm

“Workforce and Economic Development in Detroit” Panel

This panel discussion, led by alumnus and 2015 Sojourner Truth Fellow Malik Goodwin, will discuss the workforce pipeline to economic growth opportunities in Detroit.  Economic inclusion is a visible and important topic right now in the City of Detroit, as economic and physical resurgence is occurring in the greater downtown and the waterfront. Concerns over the access to opportunities and the level of participation of Detroit residents in the local economic development activity are well documented in the media. Issues of race and class tend to be consistent overlapping themes within this topic area.  The audience will hear from local experts and professionals who focus daily on connecting people and companies to employment and investment opportunities, and hear their perspective on the state of workforce development policy and pipeline in Detroit and its impact on place.

Mr. Brian Watkins, Business Services Manager from the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC)
Ms. Portia Roberson, Group Executive, Human Rights and Ethics from the City of Detroit
Mr. Devon Buskin from the Greening of Detroit
Ms. Stephanie Fries, Business Development Manager from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC)
Mr. Jose Reyes, Chief Operating Officer from the Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation (DESC)

All urban planning students are invited to join a dinner with panelists before the panel, at 5:30pm in room 1227.
