Radical Planning Speaker Series – K. Malulani Castro

January 22 at 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

The Radical Planning Initiative at Taubman College entails moving our curriculum away from paternalistic top-down urban planning structures and towards empowering community-based decision-making models to generate greater equity. To ameliorate the past planning decisions that have harmed our planet and the many communities that inhabit it, we must collectively reimagine and implement new strategies to address pressing urban issues.K. Malulani Castro (European settler/kānaka ʻōiwi/Puerto Rican/diaspora) is a doctoral candidate in the Resource Policy and Behavior program at the University of Michigan’s School for Environment and Sustainability where he works with Dr. Kyle Powys Whyte (Citizen Potowatomi) on issues of Indigenous ecological philosophies and Indigenous political-economic organizing. This presentation is part of his larger dissertation which is focused on answering two questions: “Why is getting land back terrifying?” and “Why is land back necessary for a just transition?” In this session, he will focus on the second question with particular attention paid to tensions around pricing and human-land relationships.
