SAND Lab Openhouse

September 21, 2009 at 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm

UM’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning is hosting a reception and information session to celebrate the opening of a new SAND Lab on the North Campus.

Librarians Jen Green, Nicole Scholtz, Karl Longstreth and Justin Joque will demonstrate the various applications of the software available in the Spatial and Numeric Data Services (SAND) lab.

Architects, engineers, urban designers and planners can:
• Map population clusters from a variety of census databases
• Develop topographic contour lines of elevation; access wind, temperature and precipitation patterns
• Locate and download high-resolution imagery and maps
• Learn how better to use GIS, translate geographic data to CAD and integrate with Rhino and 3DstudioMax
• Use lab-specific software like Google Earth Pro to capture high-resolution imagery and StatTransfer to translate data
• Avoid the trek to the Central Campus SAND lab

Special presentation: Professor Joe Grengs will illustrate how to leverage SAND technology in a demonstration entitled, “Evaluating Roadway Systems with Network Analysis.”

The North Campus SAND lab is located in room 2207 in the Art and Architecture Building. Normal hours of operation are Monday to Thursday, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Call 734-615-5129 or visit www.taubmancollege.umich.edu/sand for more information.

Light refreshments will be served.
