Things Around Us: Architecture Fellows Presentations and Exhibition Opening

March 26, 2019 at 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Things Around Us departs from a preoccupation with everyday elements and institutions that govern architecture and its production. Such elements are inherently spatial, material, and organizational, and therefore constitutive of the discipline. They are also, importantly, coexistent with social, political, and cultural constructs and other disciplines. Through the analytical investigation and projective exploration of three basic features—plumbing, real property, and parts—the 2018–2019 University of Michigan fellows exhibition aims to articulate some ways in which heteronomy can enrich the discipline. In a wider view, the fellowship projects demonstrate that architecture concerns not only the design of freestanding structures or images, but the vast but precise array of things around us.

Gabriel Cuéllar

Gabriel Cuéllar, RA is the 2018–2019 Oberdick Fellow. Gabriel is an architect and co-director of Cadaster, a collective engaged with territorial matters and the pervasive structures that make up urban conditions. His work during the fellowship focuses on real property. In 2018, Cadaster was awarded the Architectural League Young Architects Prize.

Liz Gálvez

Liz is the founder of the architectural practice office.for.example (e.g.) and the 2018-19 William Muschenheim Fellow. Liz has taught at the Boston Architectural College and has served as a critic on reviews at MIT, the BAC, and RISD. She was a Teaching Assistant to foundational architecture studios at MIT and practiced with Merge Architects, NADAAA, Will Bruder Architects, and Rojkind Arquitectos.

De Peter Yi

De Peter Yi is the 2018-2019 Walter B. Sanders Fellow. Peter is an architect and designer, working independently and collectively on cross-cultural sites in the contemporary city. His ongoing research mines and reimagines the physical and intangible forces that bring form together toward new modes of design theory and practice.

The exhibition of projects of the 2018-2019 Architecture Fellows opens on Wednesday, March 27. The Fellows will present their projects to the college at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26 in the Auditorium. The projects present their ongoing research during their yearlong fellowship. A reception will follow the presentations, with exhibition on view in the college gallery.
