Planning well-connected bikeways for Houston, TX

The 2015 Houston Bike Plan is the updated version of the city’s 1993 Comprehensive Bikeway Plan, which has not been adapted for over 20 years. To keep pace with the growing bicycle ridership in Houston, this plan seeks opportunities to make the city a safer, healthier, and a more accessible bicycle-friendly place. The citywide bicycle network will combine existing bicycle policies and programs, provide well-connected bikeways, and improve comfort level for bike users. A well-developed bicycle network offers affordable and equal access to jobs and activities. When the bikeways capture most of the short trips in the city, it would help reduce environmental impacts.

Improving bicycle facilities could significantly benefit all kinds of people, even including those who don’t bike. Attracting more people to bike helps alleviate traffic congestion and reduce conflicts between drivers and bicyclists. The 2015 Houston Bike plan help create not only a bicycle-friendly, but also an environmental-friendly place for all citizens in the near future. This talk gives an overview of the planning process of the 2015 Houston Bike Plan, including network analysis, stakeholder engagement, and public participation.
