For this inaugural session, MOS will lead twenty-five students in a four-day design charette. Located in the College Gallery, the work-in-progress is on view to the Taubman community and the public.

Practice Sessions is part of the University of Michigan’s Third Century Initiative which funds experimental pedagogies in a bid to change how teaching and learning happen within the bounds of the institution. Over a five-year period, ten architectural practices will be invited to Taubman College to run a practice session. Each session centers on an immersive four-day design charette that culminates in a juried review and exhibition. These sessions are not workshops in the conventional sense. Invited practices are not selected to repeat a known and routinized working method in collaboration with students. Instead, invitees are called to work in an experimental mode, where everything is subject to the pressures of practice on design: the design of the session topic, the design of the work space where the session is held, the design of the way the session itself occupies the institution of Taubman College, and the design of the thing(s) produced by the practice session.

For this inaugural session, MOS will run the workshop session and the guest jurors invited to review the work at its conclusion are Sylvia Lavin (Professor, UCLA Architecture and Urban Design) and Andrew Zago (Principal, Zago Architecture). The session is open to all architecture and urban design students, undergraduate and graduate. The enrollment capacity is 25 students and selection will be based on a modified lottery that ensures a diverse mix across degrees and years. (Please note that students enrolled in Arch509-002, the Practice Sessions seminar, do not need to submit an application.)

In order to apply to the session you must be available for the entire duration of the session (i.e. available to work with MOS on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday). Your faculty from other courses have been asked to accommodate your possible absence on Friday Nov 13th and/or Monday Nov 16th. However, you will be responsible for making up any missed work.

To apply, please fill out this form and submit your response by Wednesday, October 28th at 5PM

The list of accepted students will be posted on Thursday, October 29th. We look forward to a great P.S. No.1!
P.S. Practice Session No. 2 will be held January 29-February 1, 2016 and will be run by Sam Jacob. A similar enrollment announcement will be made as we get closer to those dates.
