The Midwaste: Midwestern Wasteways and Global Futures Project Launch Party
Mary Douglas famously claimed that “Where there is dirt there is system. Dirt is the by-product of a systematic ordering and classification of matter.” Her observation poses the waste of the many systems we study as a lens through which we can perceive those systems anew. The Midwaste: Midwestern Wasteways and Global Futures is a cross-campus initiative to build an academic infrastructure for humanities-based teaching, research, and public engagement in waste studies. As a region where the national production, global circulation, and local accumulation of waste clash with histories of economic growth and visions for sustainable global futures, the American Midwest is an ideal location to develop such an infrastructure. We invite students, faculty, activists and researchers from all disciplines to join us in launching our web platform, to meet one another, and to waste a little time with us.
