SUMMARY:John Dinkeloo Memorial Lecture: Bjarke Ingels "Plan for Planet"
DESCRIPTION:“Architecture is the art and science of continually refurbishing the surface of our planet so it better fits the way we want to live\, work and play.” \nBjarke Ingels founded BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group in 2005 after co-founding PLOT Architects in 2001 and working at OMA in Rotterdam. Bjarke defines architecture as the art and science of making sure our cities and buildings fit with the way we want to live our lives. Through careful analysis of local culture and climate\, the ever-changing patterns of contemporary life\, and the ebbs and flows of the global economy\, Bjarke believes in the idea of information-driven design as the driving force for his creative process. Named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time Magazine in 2016\, Bjarke has designed and completed award-winning buildings globally. Bjarke was appointed Knight of the French Order des Arts et des Lettres and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Dannebrog in 2019 and 2018\, respectively. In 2021\, he was selected as an ambassador of the EU’s New European Bauhaus. He was named an Honorary Fellow by the AIA in 2020\, the RIBA in 2015 and the RAIC in 2014. The Wall Street Journal recognized Bjarke as Innovator of the Year in 2011\, the same year he received the Danish Crown Prince’s Culture Prize. Bjarke was also awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2004 and the ULI Award for Excellence in 2009. Alongside his architectural practice\, Bjarke has taught at Harvard University\, Yale University\, Columbia University and Rice University and is an honorary professor at the Royal Academy of Arts\, School of Architecture in Copenhagen. He is a frequent public speaker and continues to hold lectures in venues such as TED\, WIRED\, AMCHAM\, 10 Downing Street\, the World Economic Forum and many more. \nThis memorial lecture was established to recognize John Dinkeloo’s extraordinary contributions to architecture and commemorate excellence in architectural design. This annual lecture celebrates those designers whose work combines design excellence with structural ingenuity.

SUMMARY:Empowering Older Persons for Community Resilience
DESCRIPTION:This lecture explores how design can build a climate-resilient society that empowers older adults. Facing heightened vulnerability to extreme heat and service disruptions\, older adults need supportive environments to age in place. This means designing for thermal comfort\, universal accessibility\, and social connectivity. But we must go further. Intergenerational living can foster stronger communities where different age groups interact and support each other. Incorporating “Ibasho\,” creating spaces where older adults feel a sense of belonging and purpose\, is also key. By embracing these principles\, we can design for climate resilience while empowering older adults to thrive and contribute to society. \nAbout Emi Kiyota \nDr. Emi Kiyota is an Associate Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and College of Design and Engineering\, National University of Singapore\, and Deputy Executive Director at the Centre for Population Health. With over 20 years of experience as an environmental gerontologist\, she focuses on person-centered care and improving the built environment for older adults\, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Dr. Kiyota founded the Ibasho initiative\, creating elder-led community hubs in Japan\, Nepal\, and the Philippines. Her research interests include aging in place\, design for brain health\, and the intersection of aging and climate change within urban environments.

SUMMARY:The Gift Exhibition: A Debate
DESCRIPTION:The gift-giving of buildings is an overarching force of worldwide urbanization today. Corporate and personal philanthropy has been a vital and controversial agent in European and North American cities\, while inhabitants of African\, Asian\, and South American cities are increasingly concerned about their social and technical infrastructure being overdependent on European\, American\, or Chinese donors. This event will reflect on the exhibition The Gift: Stories of Generosity and Violence in Architecture (Architekturmuseum der TUM\, Munich). Curators\, researchers\, and students will discuss how uneven negotiations around the moral\, temporal\, and racial dynamics of gift-giving have shaped and continue to shape urbanization processes in four cities: East Palo Alto (USA)\, Skopje (Macedonia)\, Kumasi (Ghana)\, and Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia).

SUMMARY:DECOLONIZING WETNESS – Design in the face of Climate Change & Injustice: Dilip da Cunha
DESCRIPTION:We live in an all-consuming wetness that is everywhere in the air\, earth\, seas\, flora and fauna. It precipitates\, evaporates\, storms\, seeps\, soaks\, transpires\, osmotes\, condenses. We are\, however\, not educated to live in and design with this Ocean of Wetness. We are rather educated to live on and design for an Earth surfaced by land served by water. With this Earth in trouble\, threatened by the water it enslaves\, we ask\, does an Ocean of Wetness offer an alternative?

SUMMARY:Fernando Laposse: Design for Rural Reality
DESCRIPTION:Fernando Laposse specializes in transforming humble natural materials into refined design pieces. He has worked extensively with overlooked plant fibers such as sisal\, loofah\, and corn leaves. Laposse’s works are the result of extensive research which culminates in objects of “endemic design” where materials and their historical and cultural ties to a particular location and its people take center stage. He often works with indigenous communities in his native Mexico to create local employment opportunities and raise awareness about the challenges they face in a globalized world.
